Bayern Munich 4 – 3 Manchester United: Player Ratings

Despite scoring three goals themselves, The Red Devils conceded four and came away from matchday one with zero points on the table.

Christian Eriksen – 1/10

Eriksen was truly dreadful in this game. His inability to track runners and be of any use to United out of possession allowed Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sane, who was drifting inside, to tear Manchester United apart.

The numbers back this up too, as he lost all five of his ground duels.

With the ball, it wasn’t much better as the Dane gave the ball away multiple times and was incapable of carrying through midfield to relieve United of Bayern’s press.

The team’s off ball work suffers massively when Eriksen takes Mason Mount’s spot in midfield.

Casemiro defensively – 1/10
Casemiro offensively – 10/10

I had to split Casemiro’s performance into two parts.

Defensively, he was just as diabolical as Eriksen.

It was hard to keep up the amount of times the pair of them did not track Bayern’s runners into the box, which was ultimately the main cause for United conceding so many chances. He lost 6 of his 9 ground duels and was dribbled past 5 times in this match.

Casemiro’s instincts in the box are the reason why he should be deployed further forward in the future.

He took his two goals really well to keep the score respectable.

If we get that attacking impact from him on a regular basis, it makes a lot of sense to try and maximise it whilst minimising the probelms he has been causing the team defensively in this campaign.

Bruno Fernandes – 5/10

It wasn’t Fernandes’ best game either.

He gave the ball away many times throughout, including prior to Bayern’s fourth and decisive goal by Mathys Tel.

It was a good cross for Casemiro’s second, something we can hope to see more of in the coming games.

Marcus Rashford – 6/10

United’s left winger largely struggled to have an impact as he was stifled by Dayot Upamecano’s defensive work on that side.

That being said, he did get the assist for Rasmus Hojlund’s goal whilst also creating a big chance so it wasn’t the worst display from the Englishman.
