Midfield Space
United’s injury crisis has significantly impacted their ability to control midfield spaces, with gaps opening up that Ipswich exploited.
Most injuries have hit the centre of defense and midfield, forcing Noussair Mazraoui to start at right center-back and Jonny Evans on the left.
In midfield, United relied on Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, a duo not ideally suited to Amorim’s high-energy system.
Amorim’s style demands relentless running from midfielders to cover wide gaps, as well as precise timing from centre-backs to step up and block opposition players turning in dangerous areas.
Neither aspect functioned well against Ipswich.
Omari Hutchinson repeatedly received the ball in wide midfield pockets and evaded Jonny Evans to create chances.
Fortunately, reinforcements are on the horizon.
Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Manuel Ugarte, and Kobbie Mainoo are all set to return soon, addressing many of these physical shortcomings.
If Amorim can instill better positional discipline and ensure the team moves cohesively out of possession, these vulnerabilities should diminish significantly.
