1. Centre backs

A strong centre back partnership is not always about picking the two most talented players.

It’s about finding the right balance.

Players need to complement each other in style and positioning.

Erik ten Hag’s first-choice duo of Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt, can sometimes be too reactive, with both preferring to play on the front foot.

This can leave the defence vulnerable, especially when both centre backs are aggressive.

The ideal pairing often consists of one defender who steps forward to press and win the ball, the more aggressive player.

Then, another who is more positionally aware, covers behind.

While Manchester United don’t have this perfect balance in abundance, especially with Lenny Yoro out injured, the pairing of Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire provides more of this needed contrast.

Though they may not be the most talented individuals in the squad, their complementary styles created a more stable partnership in todays game.
