Mark Hughes is a Manchester United legend.

The Welsh striker scored 120 goals across two spells at the club.

He first joined in 1980, breaking into the first team a few years later.

However, in 1986, he was sold to Barcelona for £2 million.

But by 1988, Sir Alex Ferguson made it a priority to bring Hughes back to Old Trafford for a club record fee – a decision that proved to be pivotal over the coming years.

Hughes became a key figure in United’s success, most notably scoring 22 goals during the 1993/94 season, helping United secure their first-ever double.

This was following on from a season where he scored 15 as Manchester United’s top scorer as the club won first ever English Premier League title.

In contrast, Hughes’ time at Southampton, which began in 1998, was not as legendary.

His most notable achievement during his stint with the Saints was setting the record for the most yellow cards in a season with 14 – an unfortunate accolade.

By the time he joined Southampton, he was more in the twilight of his career and was forced more into the midfield rather than his familiar role as a striker.

After two years, Mark Hughes had an equally disappointing spell at Everton, before a final spell at Blackburn Rovers.

His time at Blackburn was much more successful, winning a League Cup trophy in the process, and it was at Ewood Park that he finished his career.

While he wasn’t a legend at Southampton, Hughes’ impact on the Premier League remains undeniable.
