Harry Amass is quickly showing his potential, using the pre-season to show what he’s capable of as an option to fix Manchester United’s left-back problem.
Last season saw both senior left-backs, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia ruled out through injury, with neither available for United’s preseason tour of the United States. Shaw currently on leave following Euro 2024 which saw England get through to the final against Spain where they unfortunately lost 2-1, however Malacia is still recovering from his injuries.
Due to the extent of the issue this caused last season, the Red Devils have been considering recruiting a left-back this transfer window, with players like Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell, Feyenoord’s David Hancko and ex-Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso as potential fits.
However, United prospect Harry Amass is keen to throw his hat in the ring and fight for the spot.
Amass was chosen over teammate Sam Murray to start the match vs Arsenal in Los Angeles this week. Despite the result, with Arsenal coming out on top, Amass seemed to impress in during his first half performance, taken off for Murray at half time.
Praise for Harry Amass against Arsenal
With Arsenal being United’s toughest test so far this pre-season, previously playing Rosenborg and Rangers, the decision to chose Amass to start the game is a massive showing of Erik ten Hag’s confidence in the defender.
Throughout the half, Amass showed composure on the ball, being able to run with it and pick out his teammates well.
Amass was unlucky with Arsenal’s first goal as he attempted to play Gabriel Jesus offside. In the absence of VAR, the on pitch decision could not be challenged even though it did look to be offside.
The 17-year-old looked confident on the pitch and is hopeful of recreating his form at academy level. Taking to Instagram after the game, writing simply ‘First one’, showing his excitement for more opportunities to come his way.
Several of Amass’ academy teammates responded to this message, including Ethan Wheatley, Sam Mather, and recent United departure, Willy Kambwala.
Kambwala, who recently left Manchester to sign for Villarreal, reacted saying: “Top, top”, in response to Amass.
Although Amass is yet to make his senior debut for the club, he has been highlighted as a player to watch as a success for the club by Luke Shaw.
This opportunity in hte pre-season could see him have a huge role to play against Real Betis and Liverpool, potentially looking at starting both games.
