Wayne Rooney has warned Manchester United to stop chasing big names in the transfer market.

Instead, to build around players who fit the team’s identity.

It comes ahead of what’s expected to be a crucial summer window for the Red Devils.

Ruben Amorim is set to oversee his first full transfer campaign as head coach following a rocky start.

Despite high expectations after his arrival, Amorim hasn’t brought about the instant bounce fans and owners hoped for.

Although, he remains confident that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are behind his long-term vision.

However, the size of the transfer budget will depend heavily on whether United can win the Europa League and qualify for the Champions League.

Especially with Financial Fair Play restrictions also looming.

Wayne Rooney backs Matheus Cunha signing

Rooney, speaking on The Overlap, insisted that United’s recent history of signing superstar names like Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic hasn’t delivered results.

The former club captain instead pointed towards the likes of Wolves striker Matheus Cunha, as a more sensible profile United should now target.

“I think he’s a top player,” said Rooney.

“A lot of players have come with big reputations and struggled.

“United needs to identify a core group who can sustain the club over the next two or three years.”

He stressed that building around committed, hungry players would bring far more consistency than another attempt to land marquee stars.

Rooney added: “Financial Fair Play might hit them as well, so the recruitment has to be miles better.

“A bit of what Liverpool have done – gradually rebuild with the right players.”

Cunha, who joined Wolves after spells at RB Leipzig, Hertha BSC and Atletico Madrid, has enjoyed a fantastic campaign in the Premier League, scoring 13 goals so far.

The Brazilian is now just two goals away from breaking the Premier League record for most goals by a Brazilian in a single season.

A record currently held by Roberto Firmino and Gabriel Martinelli (15).

His performances have caught the eye just as Wolves continue their late-season push.

One that included a 1-0 win over Manchester United last weekend.
