Ruben Amorim has outlined his long-term ambitions for Manchester United after their FA Cup exit at the hands of Fulham.
United’s last hope of silverware this season now rests on the Europa League after a frustrating afternoon at Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes impressed once again, equalising after Fulham took the lead from a corner.
But with the game locked at 1-1, it ultimately went to extra time and penalties, where United fell short.
There were some positives, including Chido Obi’s impact off the bench.
Overall, it was another disappointing result in an underwhelming campaign.
Amorim now faces a quick turnaround.
He has just three days to prepare his depleted squad for a crucial Europa League clash against Real Sociedad.
While that is his immediate concern, his long-term ambitions are much greater.
Wayne Rooney tells Amorim to be ‘selfish’
Despite the setbacks this season, Amorim remains committed to INEOS’ vision of winning the Premier League by 2028.
He wants to be the man to lead that charge, though former United captain Wayne Rooney has warned him about the realities of modern football.
Speaking on BBC Sport, Rooney said:
“I think he’ll get time. It’s not a free hit because he’ll expect more from Manchester United than what we’re seeing since he’s been in.
“It’s very difficult to come in during the season and have no pre-season, but he has to look to the future and moving forward.
“He says winning the Premier League, how can they compete? To get further up the table, I think that’s the next step for them.
“Managers aren’t getting that time over the last 10/15 years.
“You have to be selfish as a manager and say ‘okay, if I don’t do it now I might not get that time.’”
In response to Rooney’s comments, Amorim insisted he is not naive about his goals.
He knows winning the Premier League will take time, but also understands that earning time requires achieving short-term results.
The United boss has urged patience from fans and owners alike, acknowledging that there is no quick fix for the club’s current struggles.
However, he has also sent a clear warning to his squad ahead of the summer transfer window – changes will be made.
Amorim is determined to build a squad in his own image, one that aligns with his tactical vision.
Only then, he believes, should he be judged on results.
As for winning the Premier League, Amorim sees it as the club’s rightful place and is determined to take United back to the top.
