Since acquiring a minority stake in Manchester United last year, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have had almost complete control over the footballing operations within the club.

After years of pundits and former players complaining about a void of best in class at the club, Sir Jim went about shaking things up from a boardroom level and beyond.

The new hierarchy would provide a high level base off the pitch that would result in improved performances and results on the pitch.

Areas of the club that have since been overhauled includes player recruitment, manager appointments, and the overall strategy implemented at Old Trafford.

One of the new visions of the club was Mission 21.

Alternatively dubbed Project 150, the idea was that the hierarchy were looking to bring the 21st league title to Old Trafford by 2028 – 150 years on from when the club was formed.

A key part of that plan was to appoint Ruben Amorim as head coach of the club with hopes that he would lead The Red Devils to English Premier League victory for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson was at the club.

However, things have not gone as well as expected under the Portuguese coach and this has led to the ownership reconsidering their original.

The Mirror report that, given the results and performances since Amorim joined the club, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is considering scrapping the plan altogether.

The new belief is that it could take Ruben Amorim years to build a Manchester United team capable of winning the English Premier League.

There doesn’t seem to be any blame attached to Amorim himself and it’s more of an acknowledgment that the quality of the squad and the poor financial standing of the club are the key factors that hinder immediate success.

While the club expected results to be better than those Amorim has delivered so far, there’s a realisation that the former Sporting Lisbon coach must be given time if he can’t be bankrolled in the transfer market.

That seems to make sense because Ruben Amorim has completely changed the formation of the team since taking over.

This requires a new set of players as the current squad is not equipped to play that way.

If you’re going to bring a new man to implement a new formation, you have to give them the players to have a chance of making it a success.

So it seems like the hierarchy are willing to do that and are prepared to push back their initial target for the next English Premier League title.
