Since leaving Manchester United in 2024, Scott McTominay has made himself a fan favourite at Napoli – the current Italian champions.

In his time at the club, he has been able to win Serie A whilst subsequently picking up the competition MVP award.

He was also able to score the winning goal in the Serie A side’s final 2024-25 league game which consequently meant that the Naples outfit won the Serie A title.

Furthermore, as a result of his nature as a player and his adjustment to life in Naples, he has been honoured with a shrine in the city, something that has been done with other famous Napoli players.

However, even with all these achievements and plaudits, the Scottish international will arguably be aiming to improve on the performances of last season that saw him score 12 times.

Now, at the start of his second campaign at Napoli, the 28-year-old has pulled off a major and historic feat that has never been seen in the Italian top division before.

In today’s game against Sassuolo, the Serie A season opener, Scott McTominay was able to score the first goal with the goal falling in the 17th minute.

With this landmark, McTominay has become the first ever Scottish player to score the first goal of a Serie A campaign, an historic feat both for the league and for Scottish football.

Currently, at the halfway stage of Napoli’s game against Sassuolo, the versatile man has been rewarded with a match rating of 7.8 by FotMob, the highest of any player on the field.

The Scottish international will now arguably turn his attention towards finishing the game strongly and kicking off, what he will hope will be, a successful campaign.
