Manchester United will take on Tottenham Hotspur in next week’s Europa League final in Bilbao.

A fixture that, despite its significance, has been met with mockery by rival fans.

That’s largely due to both sides languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League.

Some have been branding it a “El-Sackico” despite the Champions League spot on offer for the winners.

Now, in the build-up to that crucial clash on May 21, United’s internal operations have come under fresh scrutiny.

Ruben Amorim to pay for tickets after being left ‘unimpressed’

Sources have told ESPN that manager Ruben Amorim has personally stepped in to pay for 30 members of his backroom staff.

That is including coaches, physios and support personnel, to attend the final with their families after being informed by the club that they would have to buy their own tickets.

Amorim’s gesture comes after United’s hierarchy continued with their cost-cutting drive.

A regime which includes plans to axe up to 200 jobs this summer.

Despite receiving an allocation of 15,000 tickets for the final at San Mames, United decided to offer just two tickets per staff member for purchase, rather than fund the trip as a gesture of appreciation.

The decision, sources told ESPN, was made to prioritise giving fans a greater share of the allocation.

In contrast, PSG who are preparing for the Champions League final, confirmed last week they would fund travel and tickets for 600 club staff to attend their match in Munich.

United players themselves have only received two tickets each, with no travel costs covered for friends or family.

Amorim was reportedly unimpressed by the club’s stance.

The Portuguese insisted he would personally fund the costs so that his staff could attend with up to two family or friends each.

Amorim who has had to manage through a turbulent six months, saw it as a vital way to reward loyalty and dedication.

Especially for lower-paid staff whose contributions often go unseen.

It’s a gesture that reflects a stark contrast to the decisions made at executive level.

Yet again places the spotlight on Manchester United’s cost-cutting culture under INEOS.
