Ruben Amorim speaks out to defend Andre Onana’s big blunder

Andre Onana has struggled to perform since joining the club from Inter Milan.

Manchester United suffered their eighth Premier League defeat on Boxing Day, losing 2-0 to Wolves.

The result came as Wolves enjoyed a boost under their new manager.

However, United have yet to experience the same boost under Ruben Amorim.

Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag a month ago, but many of the same issues persist.

United continue to concede from set-pieces and lack firepower in attack.

There have been minor improvements, but results have not followed.

At Molineux, United’s defensive frailties were exposed again.

A 2-0 loss left the team 14th in the league table.

Bruno Fernandes’ red card saw United reduced to ten men before Wolves capitalised.

Matheus Cunha scored directly from a corner, raising further doubts about Andre Onana.

Wolves sealed the win in injury time through Hwang Hee-Chan.

The defeat was United’s fourth in five games and Amorim’s third straight loss, a first in his career.

The goal spared deja vu for United fans.

Recalling a similar goal conceded against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup.

That time, Altay Bayindir was at fault.

After the match, Amorim defended Onana when questioned about the goal.

He played opposition players for obstructing his goalkeeper.

“I think he cannot go to the ball,” Amorim told reporters in his post-match press conference.

“He’s trying to reach the ball and some guys are not even looking at the ball.

“But I don’t want to focus on that. I think the good thing is we were near the goal.

“Even with 10 men. That is a good thing, but we lost.”

Amorim took small positives from United’s attacking presence.

However, his forwards continue to struggle in front of goal.

Despite small improvements, set pieces remain United’s biggest weakness.

They have conceded 18 goals from dead-ball situations in 2024.

Fixing this glaring issue alone, will help Amorim steady the ship at United.
