Ruben Amorim has explained that he wants his side to ‘control the ball without fear’.

He will join Manchester United on Nov 11, before the next international break, and will take charge of his first game against Ipswich Town on Nov 24.

Before then, the 39-year-old will manage two more games with Sporting CP – a league game againt Braga on Sunday and a blockbuster Champions League clash with Manchester City this evening.

Ahead of tonight’s affair, Ruben Amorim discussed his tactical approach and his thoughts on facing Pep Guardiola’s side.

Facing Pep Guardiola and Manchester City

He recognised that he may not enjoy as much possession against English teams compared to the Portuguese league.

Amorim’s Sporting side have dominated the Primeira Liga, winning all 10 of their games, while scoring 35 goals and conceding only three.

‘I think it’s tough to say that [I look forward to coming against Guardiola more], I think it’s very challenging but not just Pep, all the best coaches are in England, so it’s a different world.

‘In Portugal, you have the top three teams and you control most games, but there it’s a different world and I need that as a coach now.

‘To say I’m looking forward to a challenge like that, maybe not [laughs],’ he said.

Tactical Approach

Amorim went on to say that he expects his team to play without fear and to not shy away from the occasion.

Fans will certainly judge Sporting’s performance tonight and, by extension, Amorim himself.

For the Portuguese coach, this is insignificant – he wants his side to employ their usual approach.

‘I think we have the talent to play well but they have to feel comfortable, so that is my focus.

‘I understand there are going to be a lot of people judging my team and judging my work in only one game.

‘I know that, but I’m not thinking about it. I’m just focusing on my players and the quality of the team.

‘Of course, I want a team that can control the ball without fear but we will see tomorrow,’ he said.
