Ruben Amorim’s tactical setup is expected to remain largely unchanged heading into the 2025/26 season.
The Portuguese manager prefers a 3-4-2-1 formation, with two number tens operating in the half spaces behind a lone striker.
With new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo likely to take up those advanced midfield roles, questions have naturally arisen about the future of Kobbie Mainoo and where he fits into Amorim’s plans.
Mainoo, a product of the Carrington academy, is widely viewed as one of Manchester United’s brightest young talents.
At a club with such a rich tradition of developing homegrown players, his involvement should be a priority in any manager’s plans.
United’s identity is built around youth, and academy players like Mainoo are central to maintaining that legacy.
Under Erik ten Hag, Mainoo was used as a deeper midfielder but seems to have adapted under Amorim.
His versatility allowed him to do this, but the new system under Amorim has posed different challenges to Mainoo.
Amorim was asked about Mainoo’s role during a recent press conference, with Laurie Whitwell reporting his response via X.
“He can play in both positions in the midfield. Last year he played more in front, his best position is with the ball. I think he is a big talent. I think he needs to increase the rhythm, the pace, I am always on that with Kobbie. He can be better.”
Amorim clearly views Mainoo as an important part of the midfield setup, especially in the double pivot.
The emphasis now will be on ensuring the young midfielder sees plenty of the ball, where his technical ability and composure can have the greatest impact.
Although Mainoo endured a slightly underwhelming campaign last season, he appears poised for a bigt year under Amorim, who is determined to unlock his full potential.
Amorim on Mainoo: “He can play in both positions in the midfield. Last year he played more in front, his best position is with the ball. I think he is a big talent. I think he needs to increase the rhythm, the pace, I am always on that with Kobbie. He can be better.” #MUFC
