Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United has not started in the manner many had hoped, with pressure continuing onto this season, having failed to win either of first two league games.

A narrow defeat at home to Arsenal, followed by a disappointing draw away at Fulham, has raised concerns about both results and performances.

Much of the scrutiny has centred on Amorim’s tactical set-up, with critics suggesting his 3-4-2-1 system leaves the side unbalanced.

Alongside those questions, there has been debate about his player selections.

Particularly the limited involvement of academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo.

That backdrop has made today’s development all the more dramatic.

According to Fabrizio Romano on his latest YouTube channel, Amorim is set to take part in emergency face-to-face talks with Mainoo to discuss the midfielder’s future at Old Trafford.

The meeting, scheduled just hours before United face Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, will also involve the player’s representatives and members of the club’s hierarchy.

Romano described the talks as “in the next few hours” on his YouTube channel, noting that the timing alone sums up how quickly this issue has escalated.

United are believed to be open to offers in the region of £45m for Mainoo before the transfer deadline, despite rejecting higher approaches earlier in the year.

The 20-year-old has grown frustrated at being left on the bench in the opening fixtures and is yet to agree terms on a new deal, with wage demands proving a stumbling block.

Amorim has publicly stated that he has “big plans” for the midfielder, but actions on the pitch have not matched those words so far.

With considerable outside interest in Mainoo but no active negotiations ongoing, this emergency meeting signals United’s determination to resolve the situation internally.

For supporters, the fact Amorim has been brought directly into discussions may offer some reassurance that the club still view the youngster as a key part of their future.

European giants such as Napoli though, will continue to keep a close eye on his situation.
