Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has come out to urge one of the club’s struggling stars to fight to stay at Old Trafford.
The club are currently going through their worst run of the Premier League era, with no European football after coming 15th overall last season.
As a result, several United stars have no future at the club with others struggling to fight for their place as replacements join the club before they’ve departed.
The “bomb squad” consisting of Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were all told they have no place at Old Trafford, needing to find new clubs this summer.
Alongside them the likes of Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund have also been struggling, with Benjamin Sesko joining The Red Devils, taking Hojlund’s spot as most likely to be the new first-choice striker.
As such, United are looking to offload Hojlund, most likely to Serie A, returning to the Italian league after a stint with Atalanta.
However, former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has encouraged Rasmus Hojlund to fight for his spot at Old Trafford.
Talking to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, Schmeichel commented: “If I were to advise Rasmus, and I was his agent, or his father or whoever he listens to, I would take a one-year loan deal to a place where you play against the same kind of defense, physical defenders, where the game is of the same nature, but it’s an easier place to be, and then on a team that creates a lot of chances.”
He continued: “If he could leave, score 20-25 goals and he could come back next year and ask the manager: ‘Can you use me now or can’t you use me now?’.
“We saw last year that he is a fighter and he wants to fight for every little thing, he has never been given anything and I think deep down he wants to fight for his place. But if the manager has decided that there is not enough space and there are many strikers, it is a difficult situation for him, says the former goalkeeper.
