Tonight saw Manchester United reach a new low after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Grimsby Town after a dreaded penalty shoot-out.
Grimsby went up 2-0 after yet another disastrous display from Andre Onana in his first start of the season, before Bryan Mbeumo found his first goal as a United player to mount a comeback.
Once again, Harry Maguire stepped up and scored with his head in the dying minutes to level the two clubs, sending them to penalties, where Grimsby ultimately won out.
Unfortunately, this shocking performance and result is going to bring a lot of heat to Carrington with much more expected of Ruben Amorim and his men.
For the club to have any chance moving forward, changes will have to be made, with the club reportedly giving up on one star in particular.
Manchester Evening News have reported that Amorim and other staff at United have given up on Manuel Ugarte after the Uruguayan midfielder failed to impress in his debut season last year.
Last season, after moving to Old Trafford from PSG, the 24-year-old made 45 appearances averaging at 65 minutes per game, as Ugarte was signed as a partner for Kobbie Mainoo under Erik ten Hag.
However, since returning from preseason, the Uruguay international has been demoted to the bench in place of veteran midfielder Casemiro.
Now, Manuel Ugarte has made his first start of the season, not exactly going to plan, with Samuel Luckhurst simply describing his performance as “not up to it”.
United are already looking to sign a new midfielder this summer, and with Kobbie Mainoo’s future being uncertain amid a whole host of clubs looking to sign the England international, a remodelling of the central midfield options could be in order.
