Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday highlighted ongoing concerns about the team’s lack of a cutting edge in attack.

Bruno Fernandes gave United the lead with a stunning free-kick just before half-time, punishing Arsenal for failing to take advantage of their dominance in possession.

However, Declan Rice struck in the 74th minute to level the game.

Despite both sides pushing for a winner, neither could find a decisive goal.

United had several good opportunities in the second half, but their struggles in front of goal continued.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have faced criticism for their lack of output this season.

The duo have managed just five Premier League goals between them.

Zirkzee did find the net in midweek against Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

However after watching the Dutchman’s performance against Arsenal, United legend Paul Scholes remains unconvinced.

Paul Scholes unsure on Joshua Zirkzee’s role

Speaking after the match on Premier League Productions, Scholes questioned what Zirkzee brings to the team.

The Englishman expressed his doubts over whether he fits the role of a traditional striker.

“Both teams are in desperate need of a striker,” Paul Scholes said.

“Zirkzee I thought was a little bit disappointing today.

“I’m not sure he’s a number nine or a number ten.

“I’m not really sure what Zirkzee brings to the team.

“Rasmus Hojlund is obviously still having his issues, but both teams are crying out for attacking players.”

United manager Ruben Amorim is well aware of the attacking deficiencies in his squad but continues to rely on Bruno Fernandes to lead by example.

Despite missing out on a win, Amorim felt United were unfortunate not to take all three points, pointing to the chances his team created.

“If you look at the chances and then look at the game, Arsenal had more possession, but we tried to play the game in a low block,” he explained.

“So it’s hard to say that we deserve it as Arsenal also tried to win the game.

“But, if you look at the chances, I think we were quite close to winning the game.

“David Raya did really well to defend his goal and, sometimes, if the ball is 10 centimetres a little bit to the side, it can change a game.”

With a crucial Europa League second leg against Real Sociedad coming up, Amorim will need his attackers to step up if United are to progress.
