Newport County have had a season to forget in League Two.

With just 13 wins all season, the Welsh side finished in 22nd position in the league.

That’s just one position higher than the relegation spots.

Any worse and Newport County would have been playing in non league.

With that in mind, the leadership at the club had to make a decision.

And two days ago, they announced that they were officially parting ways with caretaker head coach Dafydd Williams.

Williams had previously served as assistant manager at the side after Nelson Jardim was relieved of his duties in March.

Jardim himself had only been appointed new head coach in July last year.

With these changes, it’s clear that Newport County are looking to go in a new direction for the campaign coming up next season.

And it seems that their sights are set on a current Manchester United coach for their next manager.

David Hughes is likely not a name familiar with even the most diehard of Manchester United fans.

But the 47-year-old is currently a Manchester United academy coach having joined the club from Cardiff City in 2022.

BBC report that David Hughes is the leading contender to take over as the new Newport County manager.

If the news turns out to be true, it would be the first managerial appointment for Hughes.

The move will take the United coach back to familiar grounds.

David Hughes was born in Wrexham and has previously worked for the Football Association of Wales.

Adding more detail to the story, the BBC report that it’s expected that Hughes will be bringing his own experienced backroom staff with him.

Whether that means more Manchester United staff will be swapping Old Trafford for Newport County remains to be seen.

It is believed that the Welsh side are looking to wrap up the appointment fairly soon, so expect to hear an announcement fairly soon.

David Hughes isn’t the only Football League side looking to bring some Manchester United expertise to their club.

Recently relegated Southampton are believed to be in discussions to appoint former Manchester United coach Eric Ramsay as their next head coach also.
