This summer has seen Manchester United undergo a major transformation, with a whole host of big names leaving he club, making way for new faces.
The “bomb squad” consisting of Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Tyrell Malacia have all departed except for the later, with Rasmus Hojlund also going out on a season-long loan to Napoli.
In their place, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, Diego Leon and Senne Lammens have all joined the squad, with midfield being the only area not recruited to.
At the end of the window, it emerged that United decided against reinforcing the midfield due to being content with the current options, however The Red Devils had routinely looked at players like Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, and Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand.
The latter has been linked with an Old Trafford move since Ruben Amorim left Sporting for United last November.
Now however, Hjulmand has been reported by Ojogo as discussing the transfer rumours and links to leaving the Portuguese side throughout out the summer.
Speaking to the Portuguese outlet whilst on international duty with the Danish national team, Morten Hjulmand commented: “They’re talking about rumours, but I don’t identify with them.”
He continued: “I identify with the fact that I should start [preseason] at Sporting and get back in shape after the holidays.
“We had some very good games, in which we played at a good level, even though we lost at the weekend in a derby against FC Porto. We’re not in first place right now, and we want to get back there.
“That’s what I can conclude from the last few weeks. I don’t want to say if I had to deal with anything specific.”
As such, it seems the midfielder is keen to remain with Sporting for the time being, refusing to engage with any specific transfer speculations.
