Historically, moments of adversity often led to collapses.
Such as the infamous 0-7 loss at Anfield or the 3-6 defeat at the Etihad.
Similar scenarios unfolded against Bournemouth and Newcastle earlier this season.
Against Arsenal, United faced a double blow with Dalot’s dismissal.
As well as Arsenal’s equaliser too, but United demonstrated newfound mental fortitude to hold on and win.
Richards remarked: “They didn’t crumble, and that is the difference.
“They’re not playing brilliantly, but to play out the game after Dalot got sent off shows a new maturity.
“We have to give them credit for their spirit.”
His comments underscore a shift in the narrative at Old Trafford, especially after the draw at Anfield and victory at Arsenal.
This was a team previously criticised for its fragility and inconsistency, epitomised by a four-game losing streak earlier in the season.
The inconsistency question will be addressed in upcoming matches against Southampton and Rangers, games that don’t carry the same marquee status.
For now, United’s ability to overcome adversity against top teams is a foundation to build upon.
