Manchester United’s decision to part ways with Mason Greenwood in 2024 came after months of intense public scrutiny.

The forward’s off-pitch legal issues, and the eventual dropping of charges, still sparked a fierce debate over whether he should ever play for the club again.

United ultimately concluded his future lay away from Old Trafford, a move that still divided opinion among supporters and pundits alike.

Greenwood, still just 23, sought a fresh start abroad – sealing a switch to France in a bid to rebuild his career.

Since then, he has thrived under former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi at Marseille, scoring 22 goals in 36 appearances.

However, his latest outing grabbed headlines for all the wrong reasons.

As stated by GiveMeSport’s report, Greenwood became embroiled in a heated altercation with Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings during a pre-season clash at the Velodrome.

The flashpoint sparked a brief melee, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang attempting – and failing – to separate Mings from Greenwood.

In the tussle, Greenwood’s shirt was left in tatters, hanging off his shoulders by the time order was restored.

Marseille went on to win the friendly 3-1, but the drama on the pitch overshadowed the scoreline.

For Mings, it marked another step in his comeback after more than a year out with an ACL injury.

While Greenwood’s fiery display showed no sign of a player easing off in pre-season.

Villa have endured a mixed warm-up campaign, while Marseille will be aiming to hit the ground running in Ligue 1.

Although both managers will surely demand greater discipline ahead of competitive action.

Greenwood’s long-term future still remains uncertain – having recently been linked to join Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr.

Ronaldo is believed to be in support of the idea of signing Greenwood, although Serie A giant Inter Milan remain interested too.
