18-year-old full-back Harry Amass is set to be handed his first-ever start for Manchester United against Newcastle United today by Ruben Amorim, according to MailSport.
Amass has impressed for United’s U21s this season, and made his debut for the senior team last month against Leicester City.
Quick and strong, the youngster has established himself among United’s most promising young defenders this season.
The full-back is also a regular for the England U18s squad, even captaining them against Portugal in March.
Amass has clearly caught Amorim’s eye, featuring on the first team’s bench for the last four games, but now he has been given the chance to start.
Primarily a left-back, the starting role does come as somewhat of a shock.
Luke Shaw has returned from injury in recent weeks, but is yet to play any minutes.
Patrick Dorgu’s recent form has impressed and the Dane is likely rested with one eye on Manchester United’s crucial quarter-final second leg against Lyon on Thursday.
Nonetheless, the start provides a massive chance for Amass to make an impression on United fans.
The youngster is likely to be deployed as the left wing-back in Amorim’s five-back system and will potentially be aided by Leny Yoro behind him.
Jacob Murphy is likely to be the attacker running at Amass, but the defender will have to be aware of the runs of Kieran Trippier also.
The former Atletico Madrid right-back is known to overlap and find space to cross, usually to great effect.
Despite United’s position in the league, they will be keen to gain confidence ahead of Thursday night and a win at St James’ Park would provide exactly that.
Newcastle have the Champions League league positions in sight, and will be keen to continue their momentum ahead of a late push for the top five.
