Manchester United and Porto’s first meeting came in a two-legged second-round tie of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

This tournament, which was abolished in 1999, featured the domestic cup winners from across Europe.

In the first leg, Porto dominated, securing a 4-0 victory in Portugal.

Brazilian winger Duda scored a hat-trick within 50 minutes, seemingly putting the tie beyond United’s reach.

In the return leg at Old Trafford, Manchester United won 5-2 but still lost the tie on aggregate.

Porto advanced to the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by eventual winners Anderlecht.

Manchester United’s sole triumph in the Cup Winners’ Cup came in 1991, when they defeated Barcelona in the final.
