Manchester United’s U21s were back in action tonight, offering a platform for several exciting academy prospects to impress.
Travis Binnion named a strong side for the National League Cup tie against Tamworth, making a notable tactical tweak by deploying Devaney out of position in central defence while leaving Kukonki on the bench.
Among them was striker Chido Obi, who is set to remain at the club this season despite a limited pathway to the first team following the summer arrival of Benjamin Sesko.
Obi led the attack, flanked by Mantato and Scanlon.
While Sekou Kone operated unusually deep, dropping between centre-backs to receive the ball as United controlled proceedings and kept Tamworth pinned in their own half.
The fixture also provided valuable minutes for other youngsters pushing to catch the eye of first-team staff, with United continuing to prioritise development alongside their senior ambitions.
However, the match took a distressing turn in the 42nd minute when Kone suffered a head injury following a collision with a Tamworth player.
The midfielder initially returned to his feet but went back down on medical advice, prompting an extended delay as medics treated him on the pitch.
By the 45th minute, Kone was still receiving attention before being stretchered off, with the game subsequently abandoned at 0-0.
And now, it has been confirmed by Steven Railston on X, that the game has been called off after Kone’s unfortunate injury.
It is believed that it’s been called off due to there being no replacement ambulance.
Thus, meaning the game can’t be carried on incase of a medical emergency.
United fans will hope Kone’s injury isn’t as serious as it appears to be.
Kone’s talents and potential have long been recognised by United’s hierarchy, with first-team opportunities to come this season.
No confirmation has been provided yet as to the extent of the injury – we hope for a speedy recovery.
