Over recent weeks there’s been much speculation over Mason Greenwood’s future at United, following many hints of a move from Manchester, with other clubs being interested in his services.
Greenwood’s return to football following his suspension in 2022 has been highly successful with temporary move from England to Spain in the form of a loan spell at Getafe. The winger made 36 appearances across all competitions, netting ten goals and grabbing six assists, with Getafe awarding him their Player of the Season award.
The Spanish outfit made it to the Round of 16 in the Copa del Rey and achieved a twelfth place finish in La Liga, and looked to be throwing hints on X to wanting to retain the 22-year-old, posting an image of Greenwood with the caption “See you SOON, blues.”, seeming to hint towards Greenwood returning to Getafe.
Supporting the idea that Greenwood is moving away from United, the man himself put his £2 million Manchester mansion up for rent, valuing at £14,000 per week.
And it isn’t just Getafe linked with the Englishman, with German giants Borussia Dortmund also looking to sign Greenwood, along with Juventus, Napoli and Atletico Madrid.
With such interest from big name clubs, it was expected that United would be extending Greenwood’s contract to go beyond 2025, to try and secure a permanent deal for the winger. United have the option to extend Greenwood’s contract by an extra year, which could support the idea of clubs loaning the player with the intension of buying him at the end of the deal.
It’s know that INEOS are looking to offload a number of big-name assets in order to raise transfer funds and to reduce the club’s wage bill, however it’s not expected that United will sell the 22-year-old for anything less of £40 million.
However, now ESPN UK have announced on X that Greenwood has been a part of United’s retained list following the 2023/24 season, however his contract is still due to end in 2025.
At this time it’s unsure as to if this is to attempt to sell or loan the player, or if we’ll see Greenwood take to the pitch at Old Trafford once more.
