After United’s injury plague season which saw both Tyrell Malacia and fellow left-back Luke Shaw ruled out for months, United’s pre-season training has officially begun.
Malacia first picked up a knee injury at the end of the 2022/23 Premier League season, with his last competitive game being on 14th June 2022 for the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League. Whilst United were hoping to manage the injury with injections, surgery was ultimately needed with the 24-year-old having to subsequently undergo a second round of surgery, with the whole ordeal ruling him out of play for over a year.
The loss of the left-back has been greatly felt by Erik ten Hag who has had to rely on right-backs Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to cover the role throughout the season.
Now however, Manchester United have released images of Malacia at Carrington, showing that the left-back is close to full fitness and has started an individual training programme to complete rehabilitation.
The footage released by the club shows Malacia being overseen by medical staff whilst strapped up with a device attached to his injured left knee. Throughout the training, the Netherlands international was seen with the ball at his feet, sparking rumours that the left-back may be available for selection in August.
It’s understood the club are handling Malacia’s return carefully to prevent any further injuries to avoid the scale of injuries experienced this year, especially with the pre-season matches starting to get underway.
This week saw the Red Devil’s first pre-season match against Rosenborg in Norway where unfortunately the Norwegian side came out on top with a 1-0 win.
