With a £83 million release clause, United could have to offer a mega bid to sign their top target.

Manchester United have set their sight on one striker in particular next year and they aren’t letting anyone stand in their way, not even Barcelona.

United are currently 13th in the Premier League after suffering a 2-0 loss to Arsenal, ending their short-lived stint in the top half of the table.

However, with The Red Devils facing Nottingham Forest this weekend, Ruben Amorim will be hoping for another showing like their 4-0 win over Everton.

Joshua Zirkzee came to the good with a brace against The Toffees despite his poor start to the season. Marcus Rashford also got in on the action, converting the other two with assists from Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes.

However, with only Rashford, Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund as striking options, admittedly with Rashford as more of an attacking midfielder under Amorim, the club need more depth.

It is no surprise that the striker at the top of their shortlist is Viktor Gyokeres, Amorim’s former protégée.

Manchester United and Barcelona race for Viktor Gyokeres

Under the Portuguese manager, Gyokeres scored 66 goals and 23 assists in 68 games, with the striker having “his heart set” on playing for Amorim at Old Trafford.

United thought they had beaten their competition, with PSG pulling out of the race earlier this week, however, they now face off against Barcelona.

As reported by Transfer News Live, El Nacional has announced that the Red Devils are determined to pay whatever it takes to beat the Spanish side to his signature.

It was recently revealed that while Gyokeres has a release clause of £83 million, United could sign the star for a bid of around £60 million plus bonuses.

Whilst United are determined to bring Gyokeres to Old Trafford, they are also avoiding going against Amorim’s promise of not raiding Sporting in January.

As such, we could well see the fight for the Swedish striker take place next summer.
