Manchester United’s goalkeeping department is one of the most fascinating areas to watch as the club navigates the January window.

First-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana continues to come under scrutiny for his performances.

This has led to questions being raised about his consistency.

Altay Bayindir, Onana’s deputy, could be in line for more minutes but reports suggest he is seeking a move away in search of regular game time.

Adding to the complexity, United recently missed out on signing 17-year-old Australian goalkeeper Robbie Cook.

Cook, instead opted to join Leeds United instead.

However, United remain proactive in managing their goalkeeping prospects, as shown by the decision to recall Elyh Harrison from his loan spell.

According to Steven Railston of the Manchester Evening News, the 18-year-old goalkeeper has returned from Chester FC, where he impressed during the first half of the season.

Harrison joined the National League North side in August and quickly became a key player, keeping seven clean sheets in 18 league appearances.

In total, he conceded just 16 goals during his time at Chester, gaining valuable experience in a senior competitive environment.

United believe Harrison’s development would benefit from a higher level of competition, which is why another loan could be arranged for the second half of the 2024/25 season.

The young goalkeeper was named Reserve Player of the Year last season after standout performances for United’s U18s and U21s.

His shot-stopping abilities were pivotal in helping the U18s secure a memorable Premier League Cup victory over Manchester City.

Harrison signed his first professional contract with United in March 2023, just after turning 17, having initially joined the club from Stevenage Town on a scholarship deal.

The club holds high hopes for Harrison’s future, believing he has the potential to eventually break into the first team.
