Manchester United are in a difficult position both on and off the pitch.

In the league, the club holds 15th place and heads into their Premier League match-up with 18th place, Ipswich on Wednesday 26th February 2025.

A win could take the club up to 13th place depending on other results, whilst Ipswich are fighting to claw themselves out of the relegation zone.

With Ruben Amorim’s men struggling to get consistent results on the pitch, leading them to remain in the bottom half of the table most of the season, off the pitch isn’t looking much better.

Financially the club are under real pressure after years of financial mismanagement, leading to some significant changes under Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The INEOS owner has already scrapped 250 jobs with a further 200 to follow, and removed United legends like Sir Alex Ferguson and Jackie Kay from their roles as the club’s global ambassador and head of operations respectively.

On a micro level, significant cutbacks have also been made, such as smaller portion sizes and less options on the menus at Carrington and Old Trafford, whilst the club’s property services are being told to count the number of packets of screws they have to ensure they’re not over ordering.

However, despite all of this, Manchester United have now officially hired a new director.

The Athletic has reported that United have now appointed Christopher Vivell as director of recruitment.

Vivell has been in the role on an interim basis since the summer, however, he’s now signed a full-time contract.

Interestingly though, Vivell has agreed to a reduced salary in the role, showing his desire to be a part of INEOS rebuild at Old Trafford.

The recruitment guru will be directly reporting to Jason Wilcox who took on significant responsibilities after the departure of Dan Ashworth, only five months after joining from Newcastle United.

Vivell will be responsible for leading United’s global recruitment operation, scouting structure and emerging talent.

However, he’s already set for a challenge, with this area set to be significantly hit by the upcoming redundancies.
