Van Nistelrooy spent five years at Manchester United between 2001 and 2006 as a player, making 219 appearances.
With 150 goals, the striker is remembered as one of the greatest in United’s history, winning the Premier League in 2003.
Following his retirement in 2012, Van Nistelrooy joined PSV to coach the under-17s, before managing the under-19s in 2018.
The former Dutch international player would also go on to join Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands backroom staff, going into Euro 2020.
In 2022, Van Nistelrooy would become manager of PSV, before returning to Manchester United in 2024 to join Ten Hag’s staff.
His short time as interim manager of United was fruitful, with the club winning three of the four matches he oversaw, also drawing against Chelsea.
With the news of Amorim’s imminent arrival, Van Nistelrooy made way in November.
