Manchester United had a quiet January transfer window but made one major signing.
The club splashed £30 million to bring in 20-year-old Patrick Dorgu from Lecce.
The young Dane arrives to strengthen United’s left flank for the future.
He effectively replaces Tyrell Malacia, who joined PSV Eindhoven on loan.
Finding an agreement with Lecce was not an easy task for United.
The Serie A club wanted to keep Dorgu until the end of the season.
However, INEOS made it clear that it was now or never for the deal.
Lecce president Sticchi Damiani has now explained how United convinced him.

“We said several times that [Patrick] Dorgu would not leave in January,” he told TuttoMercatoWeb.
“Then Manchester United arrived and made themselves heard with us.
“We told them we had no intention of letting Dorgu go mid-season.
“We didn’t talk about figures or ask for increases.
“But instead of stopping United, this approach had the opposite effect.”
Damiani admitted that United’s persistence eventually forced Lecce’s hand.
“They insisted. We asked several times to postpone it until summer.
“We promised the young man that he wouldn’t miss the opportunity.

“For us, it was a historic step, but we just wanted to do it in July.
“The Premier League club made their stance clear—it was now or never.
“They also told the player the same.”
Damiani said Lecce had no choice but to accept the situation.
“You cannot blame Dorgu.
“Imagine you’re 20 and Manchester United knocks on your door.
“We realised we would have gone from being consistent to being stubborn.”
Damiani’s words highlight United’s desperation to get the deal done.
Ruben Amorim wanted Dorgu immediately, not in the summer.
It remains to be seen if the youngster will justify their urgency.
