Manchester United’s midfield remains a talking point after a mixed start to the Premier League season.

Performances against Arsenal and Fulham have left questions over balance in the middle of the pitch, with quality competition in that area lacking too.

The emergence of academy talents like Kobbie Mainoo last season offered hope for a fresh core at Old Trafford, but his role has become less clear since the arrival of Ruben Amorim.

Frustration has grown among fans who want to see young players trusted more regularly in the side.

Now, United are expected to make a decision on Mainoo’s future within the next 48 hours, according to Daily Mail’s report.

The 20-year-old midfielder has yet to feature this season, remaining an unused substitute in both league fixtures so far.

It’s understood he is wanting to leave the Red Devils, in order to move to a Champions League club, particularly with talks over a new contract showing little progress.

At least ten clubs are believed to be interested, with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid showing firm interest already.

Several clubs have already been making contact since Monday after the Englishman’s wishes became more apparent.

The dilemma for United is whether to sanction a loan or allow him to leave permanently – a call that must come quickly with just six days of the transfer window remaining.

The club are also under pressure to comply with profit and sustainability regulations after heavy spending this summer.

Potential outgoings such as Rasmus Hojlund to Napoli, Antony back to Real Betis on loan, and ongoing talks with Chelsea over Alejandro Garnacho could all play a role in shaping what happens next.

For Mainoo, though, clarity is coming soon – one way or another.
