In the harsh world of football management, even experienced coaches with a strong track record may have to leave quickly if their relationships and results do not work out.

European clubs are acting more swiftly to safeguard their interests, especially when early-season results fall short of expectations.

The Bundesliga has not been an exception, as the campaign has already been shaped by a number of well-known managerial changes.

This saw former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag sacked as the Bayer Leverkusen manager in just over a month.

Boardrooms move quickly to address problems within the team or club structure, and fans are quick to pass judgement.

Severance payments also come with sackings for managers.

Erik ten Hag is set to receive just under €5 million in severance following his early exit.

When combined with his salary for the two months he was in charge—from July 1 to August 31—the total payout amounts to around €6 million.

Now, another former Manchester United coach has been sacked and his severance payment has been revealed.

According to AS.com, Fenerbahce will have to pay €15M after ending Mourinho’s contract earlier than planned, as he was linked to the club until June 30, 2026.

In total, the Portuguese has earned €108.1M through severance payments.

Chelsea had to pay him twice, €20.9M and €9.6M.

He also cashed in at Real Madrid, from which he received €19.7M; Manchester United paid him €22M; Tottenham, €17.4M; and Roma, €3.5M.

The 62-year-old joined Fenerbahce back in July 2024, managing the Turkish side throughout last season after a seven-mouth spell away from management after being sacked by AS Roma in January 2024 after two and a half years.

Mourinho managed Fenerbahce to second place in the Super Lig, coming runners-up to record-title holders Galatasaray who added their 25th league title to their trophy cabinet.
