Manchester United’s pre-season preparations continue to divide opinion among fans and pundits alike.
The Red Devils are still working to offload fringe players, with the futures of Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrell Malacia all unresolved.
Meanwhile, United’s search for midfield reinforcements continues, despite several failed attempts to land key targets so far this summer.
Ruben Amorim’s backroom reshuffle has also sparked debate, as the manager tries to impose his philosophy in what is expected to be a crucial second half of the year.
Now, a former manager has expressed his views on the current regime at United.
Speaking to Record, the iconic Portuguese manager didn’t hold back when discussing the changes under INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
“Today, I think that with the change in ownership at the club, with an owner who doesn’t have much experience in football but rather in sport… What happened to Ruben, from being the manager of the worst Manchester United in Premier League history to having continuity and confidence to continue and be Ruben Amorim, is a sign that a lot needs to change,” said Jose Mourinho.
His comments underline the discontent many supporters have shared since INEOS took over football operations in early 2024.
United failed to qualify for the Champions League after a string of inconsistent performances last season.
Erik ten Hag was dismissed in October following a disastrous start, with Amorim appointed shortly after in a bid to rescue the campaign.
However, results have continued to disappoint under the Portuguese tactician, despite early optimism surrounding his appointment, and Mourinho’s public backing of his countryman.
Mourinho’s remarks will likely polarise opinion, but they raise legitimate questions about the direction United are heading in.
With the new season just weeks away, pressure is mounting on Amorim to deliver.
And if the current trajectory doesn’t improve, INEOS may be forced to rethink their long-term vision for the club.
