Former Manchester United star Javier Hernandez has come under fire of late thanks to some “very sexist” remarks on his social media.
The former Mexico international played at Old Trafford from 2010, after arriving from Chivas, until 2014 when a season-long loan to Real Madrid ended his United career, with him moving to Bayer Leverkusen a year later.
Chicharito made 157 appearances for The Red Devils, scoring 59 goals and grabbing 16 assists, helping Sir Alex Ferguson to win two of his 13 Premier League titles, as well as the Community Shield.
Since leaving Old Trafford for Bayer Leverkusen, Hernandez has had stints with West Ham United, Sevilla, LA Galaxy and now is back with his hometown side Chivas once more.
However, Javier Hernandez has received extensive criticism for recent social media remarks about gender roles.
The Washington Post has reported that the striker posted several reels and videos on Instagram over the weekend, with remarks such as “You women need to learn to accept and honor masculinity.”
Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum even came out to comment on the remarks, labelling them as “very sexist”, with Hernandez now issuing an apology on his Instagram.
The former United star commented: “I deeply regret any confusion or discomfort my recent words may have caused; it was never my intention to limit, hurt, or divide.”
He continued: “I will take advantage of this opportunity to understand, grow, and continue working to be a better version of myself.
“Thank you for your understanding, dedication, love, and support along this path.”
However, it’s not only been public criticism to reach the striker, as the Gender and Diversity Commission of the Mexican Soccer Federation and his current club Chivas have both fined the striker for his remarks, although the total value of the fines are unknown.
It’s also been reported that Hernandez has been warned that he’d face a more severe penalty were he to repeat his actions.
