Manchester United slumped to another defeat as Graham Potter’s West Ham secured a 2-0 win, intensifying pressure on Ruben Amorim who is still searching for a consistent winning formula.

But while the heat rises on the pitch, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is also coming under fire for his handling of matters off it.

Ratcliffe, who assumed control of football operations following INEOS’s minority stake acquisition, gave an interview earlier this year where he claimed United were at risk of “going bust by Christmas.”

A statement he used to underline his belief that he had saved the club.

According to The Athletic’s report, those comments did not go down well with the Glazer family.

Tension rising behind the scenes between Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Sources close to the situation say the family were uneasy with Ratcliffe’s tone and claims, especially as they came just weeks after auditors confirmed United could meet all their financial obligations for at least 12 months.

The Glazers have traditionally avoided public confrontations, and Ratcliffe’s stark, unfiltered communication style has been seen as a sharp contrast to their more cautious and silent approach.

The report highlights that tensions may already be surfacing behind the scenes.

Figures familiar with the arrangement noted discontent over Ratcliffe holding Executive Committee meetings in Monaco.

An inconvenience for the Glazers, and pushing through controversial decisions like the mid-season ticket price hike.

That increase saw concessions scrapped for children and over-65s, and all unsold tickets fixed at £66, with a five per cent hike on season tickets for 2025-26 following soon after.

Though similar price increases predated Ratcliffe’s arrival, the abrupt nature of this change marked a shift in approach.

One that insiders believe wouldn’t have occurred under previous Glazer-led leadership.

According to the report, the Glazers have effectively handed Ratcliffe more than just sporting control, and by staying silent, they have tacitly endorsed his cost-cutting measures.

Even if they privately feel uncomfortable about them.

One source told The Athletic: “The realisation has to be that they completely buy into Jim’s vision,” pointing to how the strategic review process widened Ratcliffe’s remit far beyond the pitch.

Still, some believe a falling out is inevitable.

Ratcliffe’s directness may get results, but his style is far removed from the Glazers’ slower, more deliberate methods.

Often criticised for being overly meticulous.

All of it adds up to a period of growing instability at Old Trafford – on the pitch and in the boardroom.
