Rio Ferdinand has urged Ruben Amorim to oversee a clear-out at Manchester United before the January transfer window closes.

Following a slow start to the winter transfer window, clubs are expected to accelerate deals ahead of the February 3 deadline.

United are prioritising the signing of a new left wing-back.

Luke Shaw has been struggling for fitness.

United may also target a new striker if the right opportunity arises.

Amorim acknowledged that turning things around would take time.

However the challenge appears greater than initially anticipated.

United have won just two of their last nine league matches, sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Currently sitting closer to the relegation zone than to Champions League spots.

Ferdinand believes Amorim has to offload three United players in particular.

The former centre-back specifically suggested parting ways with Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia.

Rashford has hinted at seeking a new challenge, attracting interest from domestic and foreign clubs.

Antony, following a disappointing spell at Old Trafford, has joined Real Betis.

Malacia is also expected to leave, with United eyeing Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu as a potential replacement at left wing-back.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said, “I think Antony is going.

“Someone told me he was going to Real Betis or somewhere like that.

“Get them out, man! Sorry, I’m just being honest.”

Ferdinand elaborated, “If there’s players around who are unsettled and not happy and it’s not going to plan, it’s like a cancerous, bad energy and it spreads around the changing room.”

He added, “It’s especially bad when you’re not winning.

“It makes things morbid and depressing.”

United endured a difficult festive period, losing four games in 12 days, but started 2025 with improved results.

Including a draw at Liverpool and an FA Cup win against Arsenal.

However, their struggles continued with a narrow comeback win over bottom-placed Southampton and a 3-1 loss to Brighton.

After the Brighton defeat, Amorim described his squad as “maybe the worst” in Manchester United’s 147-year history.
