Manchester United endured another dismal night as Newcastle United claimed a 2-0 win at Old Trafford.
2024 has been a frustrating year for United, with INEOS’ arrival doing little to alter the club’s fortunes.
Fans had hoped for a positive end to the year, but Newcastle’s early goals quickly dashed those hopes.
Alexander Isak and Joelinton both scored headers within the first 20 minutes to put United on the back foot.
United showed more fight after half-time but couldn’t break down Newcastle’s defence.
The defeat marks United’s fifth in their last six Premier League games under Ruben Amorim.
Joshua Zirkzee’s first half substitution epitomised the struggles United faced throughout the night.
United’s poor form has them precariously close to being dragged into a relegation battle.
The scale of the challenge facing Amorim is becoming increasingly evident.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Gary Neville singled out three players he believes have performed adequately since Amorim’s arrival.
Neville praised Amad Diallo, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui for their efforts.
He acknowledged they haven’t been outstanding but credited them for showing the right attitude.
“There are only three players that can probably say that they have done okay since Amorim arrived.
“Amad, Diogo Dalot and Mazraoui,” said Neville.
Neville emphasised that their performances haven’t been “amazing” but highlighted their willingness to adapt.
The former United captain appreciates the effort and approach these players have demonstrated during a tough period.
However, Neville pointed out a key issue with Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.
Dalot and Mazraoui have been deployed as wing-backs, a position that may not suit their strengths.
Neville revealed a concerning stat about United’s lack of goals from open play with those two as wing-backs.
“There was a stat before the game, United, every time they’ve played Mazraoui and Dalot as wing-backs, they’ve not scored a goal,” he added.
Wing-backs are vital in Amorim’s system, but United’s current options may not fit the mold.
Addressing this issue will be critical if United are to improve in 2025.
Amorim must consider alternative solutions at wing-back to spark a short-term resurgence.
