Manchester United are set to face Burnley in their last Premier League fixture before the international break, when Ruben Amorim will have some space to work with his squad before returning to face Manchester City in September.

However, Amorim won’t have all of his squad at his disposal as several stars have been called up to their national squads to take on the European qualifiers for next year’s 2026 World Cup.

Matthijs de Ligt has been called up for Netherlands, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot hare heading to represent Portugal, Patrick Dorgu and Rasmus Hojlund have been called up by Denmark and Casemiro and Matheus Cunha are representing Brazil in the South American qualifiers.

However, one of United’s young strikers has now received his first call-up, but is set to decide on the direction of his international career, being eligible for two nations.

Manchester Evening News has reported that Gabriele Biancheri has been called up to the Wales Under-21s side for the first time, joining Matty Jones’ squad for the 2027 European Championship qualifier against Denmark.

However, the 18-year-old has also spent time with Canada’s national team, being eligible to play for the North American side, having joined their senior squad earlier this summer.

However, Matty Jones is hopeful of convincing Gabriele Biancheri in sticking with Wales, saying: “It’s been a fascinating journey [for him]. He’s come through the system with us.

He continued: “What we try to do with the younger age group players is encourage them to have those experiences when they’re younger to help them make their decisions. We always feel fully confident of what we create in all age groups in terms of our environment and what it feels like, and should feel like, to represent our country.

“It was something he felt he needed to explore and all we could do was support him. The difficulty is that the scrutiny is a lot more in the older age groups.

“I’ve had two calls with him since he’s returned that were positive. ‘It just wasn’t Wales’ was quite a nice line for him to give us to know that we’d have the confidence to select him back into our environment, so we have brought him back in and he’s itching to go.”
