The Manchester Derby is always a contentious affair, with both Manchester United and Manchester City fighting it out for bragging rights.

However, last season’s derby at Old Trafford was just as contentious off the pitch with a United fan being arrested for assault.

The incident happened after the game as Old Trafford season ticket holder, Alfie Holt, slapped Jack Grealish in a heated exchange.

Now, Sky Sports as reported that Holt has pleaded guilty to a single count of assault on the City winger, who he said had called him a “little ugly w*****”, Manchester Magistrates’ Court heard.

Shazia Aslam, prosecuting, explained: “Both sets of fans were very vocal, shouting abusive comments to rival players.”

“As the complainant, Jack Grealish, a Manchester City player, enters the tunnel area, he hears the defendant shouting comments towards him. He turns and walks towards him. Both have an exchange of words.

“As the complainant walks away, the defendant slaps the complainant across the face. There was no injury. He was arrested outside the stadium.”

“The defendant uses force against a player. Players are extremely vulnerable to this sort of conduct and need to be protected.”

In his defence, his representative Melanie Winstantley spoke about his history, having no prior convictions, suggesting the event was significantly out of character.

Ms Winstanley also addressed Grealish having “doubled back” after going into the tunnel to speak to Holt, commenting: “He didn’t have to do that. It’s not unusual for players and fans to engage in banter at football matches. I’m not trying to excuse the behaviour.”

It’s understood that the United fan was given a three-year Football Banning Order and fined £120, with £85 costs and a surcharge of £48.

Speaking after the arrest, Holt commented that he had been drinking prior to the game, having been “in town” and that he had been shouting abuse at the City players.

Since the Manchester Derby, Holt’s season ticket has been revoked, marking the end of his 12 years as a season ticket holder in the Stretford End.
