Manchester United are preparing for a massive Europa League semi-final second leg this Thursday, and the mood in the dressing room is reportedly optimistic.
Following a stunning 3-0 win in the first leg against Athletic Bilbao, Ruben Amorim’s side have one foot in the final and will look to make it official at Old Trafford.
Despite their progress in Europe, their domestic form has been dismal, with United sitting 15th in the Premier League and destined for their worst-ever finish in the competition.

That decline hasn’t gone unnoticed among former players, fans, and pundits alike, with many questioning the current squad’s quality and mentality.
One unexpected critic has now joined the chorus—and he’s a name few expected to pop up.
Demetri Mitchell, a former Manchester United academy graduate, has taken a not-so-subtle dig at the club’s current squad.
Now at League One side Exeter City, Demetri Mitchell declared via X that had he broken into the first team in the current era, he believes he’d be a regular fixture.
“I reckon if I broke through during this era of Man United I’d be a first team regular,” he boldly wrote on X.
And far from being sarcastic, Mitchell doubled down on his claim when challenged by followers, clarifying that he was referring to playing as a wing-back and possibly being a squad player.

The 28-year-old added that if he were still 20 and immersed in a Premier League training environment, he would’ve adapted quickly and competed at the top level.
Mitchell made his senior debut for United in 2017 under Jose Mourinho before being sent on loan to Hearts, later signing for Blackpool in 2020.
He moved to Hibernian in 2022 and now plies his trade with Exeter, where his current deal ends this summer—though the club has offered him a chance to return for pre-season.
While some fans pointed out that current young talents like Harry Amass and Patrick Dorgu might’ve blocked his path, Mitchell clearly sees today’s Manchester United squad as lacking the level of competition that once existed.
And his comments only add fuel to the fire as United’s fall from grace continues to spark criticism—even from their own.
