So far this season, Manchester United have had a campaign to forget, having been knocked out of the Carabao Cup already and currently sitting in 14th place in the Premier League.
With only four points in four league games, it’s United’s worst start to a league campaign in 33 years, with their elimination from the Carabao Cup to Grimsby Town also making history as the first time they’ve been eliminated from a cup by a tier four side.
However, whilst the men’s team are struggling, Marc Skinner’s Manchester United Women’s team are heading up the Women’s Super League.
With six points from two games, United are drawing on points with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur; however, their goal difference of 8 has set them as the leaders.
United kick-started their campaign with a 4-0 win over Leicester City thanks to goals from Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland and a Melvine Malard brace.
Skinner’s side came out strong once again, facing London City Lionesses and emerging victorious with a 5-1 win. Once again Malard got a brace to make her the league’s top scorer, whilst Maya Le Tissier, Jayde Riviere and Jess Park joined her on the scoresheet.
However, it’s the Lionesses’ goal that has made history, coming from former Manchester United striker Nikita Parris, as the London City Lionesses’ first ever top-flight goal.
Whilst the resounding defeat sets the Lionesses at the bottom of the league table, with only West Ham United and Liverpool joining them with no points, their -7 goal difference sees them rank below the other two sides.
That said, with their first Women’s Super League goal to their name, the pressure to open up the scoring is now off, whilst Manchester United seem firmly in their stride already this season.
