Six years after his retirement from professional football, Diego Forlan is starting a new chapter in sport.

The Uruguayan striker enjoyed a 20-year long career, including a four year stint at Manchester United.

Between 2001 and 2005, Forlan played 98 games for United and scored 17 goals.

In 700 appearances across 10 different clubs, the 45-year-old scored 274 goals in his career.

Experiencing most of his success during the late 2000s in La Liga, Forlan is regarded as one of the best strikers of his generation.

Recently, he has made a surprising career switch and is set to make his professional tennis debut next month.

He will play at the Uruguayan Open between November 11 to 17.

Folan explained in the past that he wanted to emulate his father’s career, who retired from football at 41, switching to tennis thereafter.

He revealed that his love for tennis is rooted in his early childhood.

Speaking to Footboom, he said:

‘My father played football, and after retiring at 41, he took up tennis. That’s why I started playing at the age of two.

‘Everyone knows I dedicated myself to football before returning to this sport as diligently as I now do.’

In 2024, Forlan has been extremely active in tennis and is ranked 112th in the ITF Over-45 classification.

This year, he has logged eight wins and three losses in singles, while totalling five wins and just one loss in doubles.

Diego Forlan last played a professional football game for Hong Kong side Kitchee on May 13 2018.

While he may not become a legend of tennis, it is a heartwarming sight to see him enjoying life after retirement.
