This week has seen the end of the Erik ten Hag era of Manchester United, with the Dutchman being sacked by the club.

The news came on Monday morning with ten Hag being summoned to Carrington to be told.

After avoiding the sack on two occasions, ten Hag’s failure to provide results for the club ultimately saw his time at the helm come to an end.

At the point of leaving, United were 14th in the Premier League and 21st in the newly redesigned Europa League, which was a worse start than last year’s campaign which saw them end in eighth in the Premier League and crash out of the Champions League group stages.

However, sources close to the Dutchman have revealed that he was actually surprised to escape the first risk of sacking, expecting to be fired after the FA Cup at the start of the summer.

Ultimately Sir Jim Ratcliffe decided not only to stand by the Dutchman, but also extended his contract and signed off £200 million into signings over the summer.

Now, with very little to show for it, Ruben Amorim is set to take charge during the November international break and has the task of bringing United out of their current slump.

Next steps for Erik ten Hag

It’s understood from The Daily Mail that since being sacked, ten Hag has now retreated to his Austrian hideaway to take some time out and reflect on his time at Old Trafford.

It’s been reported that on the back of poor results, ten Hag would instruct more training to work harder, for longer hours, with longer meetings. This unfortunately tired players out, making more poor results more likely, thus starting a cycle.

He was so sure of his methods and strategy that when players would approach him about the possibility of changing his tactics, he didn’t listen.

Whilst ten Hag is a talented and hardworking manager, his future in management will all hang on his ability to adapt and find balance in his methods.
