Edwin van der Sar is a true Manchester United legend following his six years between the sticks at Old Trafford.
Between 2005 and 2011, van der Sar was Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-choice goalkeeper, bringing a safe pair of hands to the squad.
During this time, the Dutch international made 266 appearances, registering 135 clean sheets, with only 202 goals scored against him.
His impressive contributions helped United secure four Premier League titles, a Champions League title, a FIFA Club World Cup, three Community Shields and two English League Cups.
Since hanging up his boots in 2011, van der Sar has returned to his former club, Ajax, where he won four league titles, six domestic cups, the Champions League, the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Supercup.
However, this time he returned to the club in the role of Head of Marketing in 2012. Then, three years later, the former goalkeeper took on the duties of Sporting CEO, before becoming Ajax’s Chief Executive Officer in 2016 until 2023.
Edwin van der Sar returns to football after intense health scare
However, in July 2023, van der Sar suffered a brain haemorrhage, and being rushed to intensive care whilst on holiday in Croatia.
Fortunately, the 54-year-old was able to make a full recovery, returning to Old Trafford last year to watch United take on Aston Villa on Boxing Day.
However, this weekend sees the legendary goalkeeper return to the pitch once more.
Van der Sar is set to join the Ajax Legends in taking on Real Madrid Legends, continuing their celebration of the club’s 125th anniversary.
Ex-United manager Louis van Gaal will be in the dugout for Ajax, while former United defender Daley Blind joins Van der Sar in the Amsterdam club’s line-up.
Posting a picture from training on social media, he wrote: “Last session done before the Ajax Legends match this Sunday vs Real Madrid. Anyone else looking forward to the game?”
