There is always the potential for something crazy to go down at Old Trafford, be it off the pitch or on the pitch, but what happened on Saturday during the win against Burnley takes the cake.

Ed Sheeran is known to be a passionate Ipswich Town fan, so much so that he acquired a stake in the former Premier League club.

Though it may have first appeared that the musician was present at United’s victory over Burnley with an entourage in tow, it turned out to be an impersonator attempting to film a social media stunt.

Daily Mail reported that United’s security eventually outed the imposter, but the lookalike along with a group of people had managed to get into Old Trafford with camera equipment as they tried to film behind the scenes as The Red Devils secured three points over Burnley.

The Ed Sheeran lookalike and his companions had tickets to the hospitality area of the stadium with a security search determining the cameras they brought with them weren’t a risk.

But senior staff were alerted when they realised there was no notification received that the music star would be at the game as the impersonator was challenged by United’s staff, eventually realising it wasn’t the ‘Shape of You’ hitmaker.

Further proof was provided when a quick check of Sheeran’s schedule had him down to perform in Copenhagen that same night on his world tour and rather hilariously, when he was asked to sing.

The group was still allowed to remain in the stadium as it was determined to be a social media stunt.

For some reason, Sheeran’s name keeps popping up in United’s news.

During Ruben Amorim’s first post-match interview after a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town, Sheeran barged in on the Portuguese manager’s interview to say hello to pundit Jamie Redknapp. Sheeran later apologised, attributing the rudeness to him having consumed 10 pints.

Security eventually figured the mishap on Saturday out and the hope is that with United building a new stadium, similar standards will be upheld.

Whilst the situation can be viewed with amusement things may have been different if United had not clinched a crucial win vs Burnley.
