Saturday’s clash between Manchester United and Fiorentina will round off pre-season for Ruben Amorim’s side, and it promises to be a special occasion for more reasons than one.
United fans will not only get a glimpse of their squad ahead of the 2025/26 season, but they’ll also see a familiar face line up in goal for the opposition – club legend David de Gea.
The 34-year-old returns to Old Trafford for the first time since his 2023 departure, now as Fiorentina’s No.1 after a standout debut campaign in Serie A.
De Gea departed during the time of which Erik ten Hag was manager, as the Red Devils looked to shift to a more possession based style.
However, Onana has since struggled – leading fans to reminisce over De Gea.
His return has been the talk of the week, with United captain Bruno Fernandes even joking in a video message: “I hope I score some goals against you!”
The club have now now officially confirmed via website, that De Gea will receive a special pre-match presentation from Fernandes to honour his 12-year spell at Manchester United.
The tribute will take place shortly before kick-off, with supporters urged to arrive early to witness the moment.
De Gea, who made 545 appearances for the Red Devils and won four Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year awards, is one of the most decorated players of the post-Ferguson era.
Responding to Bruno’s message, the Spaniard said: “You cannot score against me… and if you do, it’s because I let you so people keep singing your name!”
He added: “Honestly I can’t wait to see you my friend. I can’t wait to see you all at Old Trafford.”
Nearly 60,000 tickets have been sold for the match, with a warm reception expected for the returning icon as he steps onto the pitch where he made history.
