Only two and a half months after leaving Manchester United, and Dan Ashworth looks set for his new club.

The former United sporting director moved to Old Trafford back in July 2024, after making a name for himself as a technical director of Brighton, director of development for England and sporting directors from both West Brom, and most recently, Newcastle United.

However, his move to Old Trafford was clouded in controversy as he had clandestine correspondence with Omar Berrada who was still working for Manchester City before moving to United.

Still being in contract with Newcastle, The Red Devils had to pay off The Magpies £4.1 million in compensation just to release him from his contract early.

Only five months into the role, and Ashworth was gone, with the 53-year-old feeling “side-lined” with major decisions that were ultimately decided by Omar Berrada and Sir Dave Brailsford.

The final straw was with the appointment of Ruben Amorim, with Ashworth preferring Gareth Southgate, seeing it as too big a risk to change the entire system mid-season.

Ultimately Amorim was appointed and Ashworth departed, however, his new club has been revealed.

Dan Ashworth takes new role with Warwickshire County Cricket Club

The Times has now revealed that Ashworth is taking a step away from the world of football, now turning to cricket, joining Warwickshire County Cricket Club.

The former technical director is taking on an advisory role with the club after joining their cricket audit committee back in 2021.

It’s understood that Warwickshire are set to announce a new performance director in the coming days, however Ashworth was not considered due to the low salary of the role compared to his previous jobs.

Instead he’ll be working in a voluntary capacity as an adviser on a range of matters including high performance, with his experiences in football coming into play.
