Manchester United are already deep in planning for a transformative summer transfer window, with new leadership under Ineos reshaping the club’s future both on and off the pitch.

Ruben Amorim is expected to be backed significantly in the market despite a woeful domestic campaign, and part of that backing includes rethinking the structure of recruitment and talent development at Old Trafford.

After a year of instability and underperformance, the Red Devils are desperate to regain control of their long-term sporting direction.

With United struggling to catch up to rivals in terms of infrastructure, a heavy emphasis has been placed on improving the club’s scouting network, youth development, and overall performance operations.

Several behind-the-scenes figures have already been moved on or reassigned, while Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team continue to clean up the fallout from decisions made before Ineos’ full sporting takeover.

One name still looming over the club is Dan Ashworth — and now, the man United paid £4.1 million to hire and part ways with is about to be unveiled in a major new role.

According to reports from the BBC, Dan Ashworth is set to return to the Football Association as head of elite men’s and women’s development.

Ashworth only lasted five months at Old Trafford, having been poached from Newcastle United in what Sir Jim Ratcliffe later labelled “an error on our part.”

His return to the FA — where he previously worked between 2012 and 2018 — will see him oversee the development of homegrown coaches and lead the next phase of St George’s Park’s refurbishment.

The appointment is viewed as part of a wider push to address the lack of English managers in the Premier League, with only two currently in permanent roles.

Despite no official comment from the FA, it is widely believed that Ashworth’s influence will be instrumental in shaping England’s future footballing identity across both men’s and women’s teams.

Ashworth’s swift departure from United and immediate return to the FA is sure to raise further questions about United’s internal strategy during that chaotic transitional period.

With John McDermott staying on as men’s technical director, Ashworth’s comeback is set to shake up English football — and serves as a costly reminder of United’s missteps.
