Brazil’s search for a new head coach is in full swing following the sacking of Dorival Junior just days after a 4-1 thrashing by Argentina.

It marked Brazil’s third coaching change in this World Cup cycle, following brief interim spells by Ramon Menezes and Fernando Diniz after Tite’s departure in 2022.

With crucial World Cup qualifiers on the horizon, the pressure is on the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to appoint a permanent replacement quickly.

Brazil faces Ecuador away and Paraguay at home in June, sitting fourth on the CONMEBOL table with 21 points, as the top six sides automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

According to Brazilian journalist Andre Rizek via Ge Globo, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is actively working through a shortlist of four major names to succeed Dorival, and the implications could shake the European landscape.

“Four names are on the table at the CBF,” Rizek revealed.

“The most plausible and practical option appears to be Jorge Jesus, but they are also evaluating Abel Ferreira, Carlo Ancelotti, and Jose Mourinho.”

Ancelotti, currently managing Real Madrid, is considered the “dream” appointment, but with a contract running until mid-2026 and the Club World Cup looming in July, his departure seems unlikely for now.

Abel Ferreira of Palmeiras and Jorge Jesus of Al-Hilal are both tied to the same tournament, adding further complexity to any potential pre-June move.

However, the inclusion of Jose Mourinho, now managing Turkish side Fenerbahce, brings fresh intrigue.

Mourinho is not involved in the Club World Cup, making him a more immediate and logistically simple candidate for Brazil.

Mourinho was recently involved in an altercation after his side’s loss to Galatasaray after pinching manager Okan Buruk’s nose.

The former Manchester United boss has openly spoken about his desire to manage a national team, and with Fenerbahce currently out of European contention, his exit could be seamless.

If Jose Mourinho makes a high-profile return to international management, it could spark a chain of club appointments.

With time ticking before June’s qualifiers, Brazil’s decision could shape the national team’s trajectory for the 2026 World Cup.
